Although written with applications to mathematical economics as a guiding principle, this is a book on mathematics, by mathematicians. The chapter headings are (translated from the German text): (1) Applications of functional analysis; (2) Approximation; (3) Functionals and operators; (4) The Banach-Steinhaus theorem; (5) The Hahn-Banach theorem; (6) Fixed point theorems and the intersection principle; (7) Variational principles of Ekeland type; (8) Distribution theory and applications; (9) Semi-bounded operators in Hilbert space; (10) Appendix. The first chapter gives some initial examples of applications. Most of the subsequent chapters open with the mathematical development, followed by examples and applications, and close with an appropriate selection of exercises. The Appendix includes some set theory, the Zermelo-Fraenkel system, order relations, metric and linear spaces, elements of measure and integration, probability spaces, applications of various norms in approximation problems, and other topics, and again a set of exercises. The reader should have a solid grounding in analysis and be comfortable with the methods of proof encountered there.
