A natural extension of the spectrum of the Laplace operator on the \(L^2\)-space of a complete Riemannian manifold is the \(L^p\)-spectrum, i.e., the spectrum of the Laplace operator acting on the Banach space of \(L^p\)-functions on the manifold. The purpose of this paper is to determine the \(L^p\)-spectrum of a locally symmetric space whose universal covering space is a symmetric space of rank 1 and whose fundamental group is small or its injectivity radius is bounded uniformly away from zero. By a small fundamental group, it is meant that the critical exponent of the fundamental group considered as a discrete isometry group acting on the symmetric space is small, in comparison with a cofinite discrete isometry group whose critical exponent is not small. There has been a lot of work on the \(L^p\)-spectrum of hyperbolic manifolds and symmetric spaces, and the results of this paper naturally complement these results.
