For a Banach space \(E\) and a closed convex subset \(A\) of \(E\), the modulus of convexity \(\delta_A: (0, \operatorname{diam} A) \to [0, + \infty)\) is the function defined by \[ \delta_A (\varepsilon)= \sup \left\{ \delta \geqslant 0 \biggm| B_\delta \left( \frac{x_1+x_2}{2} \right) \subset A,\;\forall x_1, x_2 \in A: \| x_1-x_2 \| = \varepsilon \right\}. \] Here, \(\operatorname{diam} A\) is the diameter of \(A\), and \(B_r(a)\) stands for the closed ball with center \(a\) and radius \(r\). A closed convex subset \(A\) of a Banach space is said to be uniformly convex with modulus \(\delta _A (\cdot )\) if \(\delta _A (\varepsilon) > 0\) for every \(\varepsilon \in (0,\operatorname{diam} A)\). In the paper under review, the authors study general properties of uniformly convex sets. In particular, they prove that in every Banach space \(E\) there exists a closed uniformly convex set if and only if the space \(E\) admits an equivalent uniformly convex norm. For a space \(Y\), the set of all non-empty subsets of \(Y\) is denoted by \(2^Y\). For spaces \(X\) and \(Y\), a mapping \(f : X \to Y\) is called a selection of a mapping \(F : X \to 2^Y\) if \(f(x ) \in F(x)\) for each \(x \in X\). The splitting problem for selections was posed by \textit{D. Repovš} and \textit{P. V. Semenov} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 334, 646--655 (2007; Zbl 1128.54012)]. In [ibid. 355, 277--287 (2009; Zbl 1169.54007)], the authors gave an affirmative solution of the problem for finite-dimensional spaces. In this paper, they also give an affirmative solution of the splitting problem for uniformly continuous selections of certain set-valued mappings with uniformly convex images into infinite-dimensional uniformly convex Banach spaces.
