The authors envisage two different constitutive responses in the interaction of impacting bodies, one for the approaching phase and the other one for the detaching phase. This model leads to a hysteretic behaviour, which accounts for the dissipative nature of the phenomenon. Eventually, the mathematical problem reduces to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation, whose linear part is investigated through a frequency analysis. The results are fairly consistent with the experimental data.
