Recent years have seen a fast and rich development of the theory of operator algebras associated to directed graphs [see \textit{I.\,Raeburn}, ``Graph algebras'' (CBMS Regional Conference Series in Mathematics 103; Providence:\ AMS) (2005; Zbl 1079.46002)]. In the paper under review, the author considers operator algebras associated to edge-coloured graphs \((V,E)\), which can be identified with free products of usual graph algebras associated with possibly different graphs having \(V\) as the vertex set (with the individual graphs corresponding to edges of `single colour'), amalgamated over the algebra generated by projections associated with vertices. Known properties of usual graph algebras and \(C^*\)-algebraic free products are used on the one hand to establish suitable counterparts of the existence, gauge uniqueness and dilation theorems, and on the other to study simplicity, exactness and \(K\)-theoretical aspects of the algebras associated with the edge-coloured graphs.
