The authors study the global structure of the solution set of the problem \[ (| u'(t)| ^{p-2}u'(t))'+\lambda h(t) f(u(t))=0\text{ a.e. in }(0,1), \] \(u(0)=u(1)=0\), where \(p>1\), \(\lambda\) is a positive parameter and \(h\) a nonnegative measurable function on \((0,1)\) which may be singular at \(t=0\) and \(t=1\), and \(f\in C(\mathbb R_+, \mathbb R_+)\). By applying a global bifurcation theorem and figuring the shape of the unbounded sub-continua of solutions, they prove several existence results for positive solutions. They also investigate the existence for sign-changing solutions when \(f\) is odd.
