The authors study the effect of stable-density stratification on heat and mass transfer in the turbulent flow regime. It clarifies the relationship of stratified effects on turbulent heat and mass transfer between homogeneous shear flow and near-wall turbulence. The numerical procedure adopted in first authors' earlier work has also been successfully used in this study. Both DNS (direct numerical simulations) and RDT (rapid distortion theory) analyses have been carried out. It has been shown that there is a close association between streamwise vortical structure and persistent counter-gradient fluxes, which show at the top and bottom of the vortex. The effect of the Richardson number has been discussed in detail. The transport mechanism of the Reynolds shear stress has also been analysed around the vertical structure.
