The rank of irreducible unitary representations of semisimple groups was first introduced by R. Howe to characterize the `size' of the infinite-dimensional representations. In this paper, the author introduces a new notion of rank for irreducible unitary representations of semisimple groups which is based on Kirillov's method of coadjoint orbits for nilpotent groups.
