Compact adjoint operators and approximation properties (Q860568)

The author introduces several weak versions of the approximation property for Banach spaces, gives some characterizations thereof and considers inheritance problems for dual spaces. For some natural locally convex topologies on the space \(B(X,Y)\) of bounded operators between two Banach spaces \(X\) and \(Y\), approximation results involving compact operators are proved. A negative answer to a density problem is given, using a result from [\textit{P.\,G.\,Casazza} and \textit{H.\,Jarchow}, Proc.\ R.\ Soc.\ Edinb., Sect.\,A 126, No.\,2, 355--362 (1996; Zbl 0851.46011)]. Finally, the notion of strong compact approximation property of a Banach space is introduced and some simple relations between the approximation property and the former are shown.
