    The paper extend the result by \textit{V. Chulaevsky} and \textit{T. Spencer} [Commun. Math. Phys. 168, 455--466 (1995; Zbl 0821.60070)] to the case of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Let \(\mu\) be a fixed nontrivial probability measure on the unit circle \({\mathbb T} \subset {\mathbb C}\), let \(\{\varphi_n(z)\}_{n=0}^{\infty}\) be a set of orthogonal polynomials on \({\mathbb T}\) with respect to inner product in \(L_2({\mathbb T}, \mu)\), and let \(T_n(z)\) be the transfer matrices: \[ T_n(z) = \frac{1}{2}\left( \begin{matrix} \varphi_n(z) + \psi_n(z) & \varphi_n(z) - \psi_n(z) \\ \varphi_n^{\ast}(z) - \psi_n^{\ast}(z) & \varphi_n^{\ast}(z) + \psi_n^{\ast}(z) \end{matrix} \right), \] where \(\psi_n(z)\) are the second kind polynomials associated to the \(\varphi_n(z)\). The Lyapunov exponent \(\gamma(z)\) is defined by the formula \[ \gamma(z) = \lim_{n\rightarrow \infty} \frac{1}{n} \log\| T_n(z)\| . \] Let \(d \nu = d \omega/2\pi\) be normalized Lebesgue measure on \({\mathbb T}\), and \({\mathcal T} : {\mathbb T} \rightarrow {\mathbb T}\) be any expanding map of the circle. The main result of the paper read: Consider \((\Omega = {\mathbb T}, {\mathcal T}, \nu)\) and suppose \(V : \Omega \rightarrow {\mathbb D}\) is \(C^1\) and satisfies \({\mathbb E}(V) = 0\). Then for \(z = e^{i \eta}\in {\mathcal T}\setminus\{\pm 1\}\), we have for sufficiently small \(\lambda\) and a.e. \(\omega\) that \[ \gamma(z) = \frac{\lambda^2 \rho(\eta)}{2} + O\left(\frac{\lambda^{5/2}}{\sin^2 \eta}\right). \] In addition, the following large deviation estimate holds: \[ {\mathcal P}\left[\omega\in {\mathcal T}: \left| \frac{1}{n} \log\| T_n(z,\omega)\| - \frac{\lambda^2}{2} \rho(\eta)\right| > \lambda^{5/2}\right] < e^{-c \lambda^4 N}. \] Finally, \(\gamma(z)\) is Hölder continuous with exponent \(C \lambda^4\) when \(z\in {\mathcal T}\) is bounded away from \(\pm 1\).
