The large time behavior of strong and classical solutions to the 2D Stokes approximation for the compressible flows is studied in the paper. The unknown velocity \(v\), the pressure \(p\) and the density \(\rho\) satisfy to the equations \[ \begin{aligned} &\frac{\partial \rho}{\partial t}+\text{div}\,(\rho v)=0,\\ &\frac{\partial v}{\partial t}-\Delta v+\nabla p=\rho\nabla f, \quad x\in \Omega,\quad t>0,\\ &p=\rho^{\gamma},\quad \gamma >1, \\ &v| _{t=0}=v_0(x),\quad \rho| _{t=0}=\rho_0(x),\quad x\in \Omega,\\ &v\cdot n=0, \quad \text{curl}\,v=0 \quad \text{on}\;\partial\Omega. \end{aligned}\tag{1} \] Here \(\Omega\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb R^2\), \(n\) is the unit outward normal to \(\partial\Omega\), \(f\) is a given function. It is proved that the problem (1) has a unique solution \((v,\rho)\) for \(t\in(0,T)\), \(\rho_0\in W^l_q\), \(v_0\in W^{l+1}_q\) with some \(q>2\), \(l\geq 1\) and any \(T>0\). There exists some constant \(C\) independent of \(T\) such that \[ \sup\limits_{0\leq t\leq T}\| \rho(\cdot,t)\|_{L_{\infty}(\Omega)}\leq C \] and \[ \lim\limits_{t\to\infty}\left(\| \rho-\rho_s\|_{L_{\alpha}(\Omega)}+\| v(\cdot,t)\|_{W^1_\beta(\Omega)}\right)=0 \] for any \(\alpha,\beta\in[1,\infty)\). Here \((v_s(x),\rho_s(x))\) is the equilibrium flow i.e. the solution to the steady problem corresponding to the problem (1). If in some point \(x_0\in \overline{\Omega}\) \(\rho_0(x_0)=0\) then \[ \lim\limits_{t\to\infty}\| \nabla\rho(\cdot,t)\|_{L_{q}(\Omega)}=\infty. \]
