Let \(d\mu(g) = \varphi(g)dg\) be a probability measure on a locally compact, amenable, unimodular group \(G\) endowed with the Haar measure \(dg\) where \(\varphi\) is a continuous function with compact support. Introduce \(d\mu^{*n}(g) = \varphi_n(g) dg\) as the \(n\)th convolution of \(\mu\). The aim is to study the asymptotical behavior of \(\varphi_n(g)\), \(g \in G\), as \(n \to \infty\). Using an explicit formula for the density of the convolutions the author establishes under certain conditions the upper bound for \(\varphi_n(g)\). The main result (Theorem 1.1) provides an estimate for \(\varphi_n(g)\) with a specified power decreasing factor in \(n\). Under additional assumptions an estimate is obtained with a factor \(\exp\{-cn^{-1/3}\}\), \(c\) being a positive constant, cf. the author [Stochastic Processes Appl. 115, No. 6, 927--937 (2005; Zbl 1076.60035)] where the relation \(\varphi_n(e) \approx \exp\{-cn^{-1/3}\}\) was proved for the identity \(e\) of \(G\).
