Let \(M^{n+1}_{1}(c)\) be an \(n+1\)-dimensional Lorentzian manifold of constant curvature \(c\), also known as Lorentzian space form. If \(c>0\), \(M^{n+1}_{1}(c)=S^{n+1}_{1}(c)\) the \((n+1)\)-dimensional de Sitter space, if \(c=0\), \(M^{n+1}_{1}(c)=L^{n+1}\) the \((n+1)\)-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space, if \(c<0\), \(M^{n+1}_{1}(c)=H^{n+1}_{1}(c)\) (i.e., \((n+1)\)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space). A hypersurface \(M\) of \(M^{n+1}_{1}(c)\) is said to be space-like if the metric induced on \(M\) from that of the ambient space is positive definite. The maximal space-like submanifolds of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold of constant curvature were investigated by \textit{T. Ishihara} in [Mich. Math. J. 35, No. 3, 345--352 (1988; Zbl 0682.53055)]. The authors prove the following main theorem which is a new characterization of hyperbolic cylinder in anti-de Sitter space \(H^{n+1}_{1}(-1)\): Theorem. Let \(M\) be an \(n\)-dimensional \((n\geq 3)\) complete maximal space-like hypersurface with two distinct principal curvatures \(\lambda\) and \(\mu\) in the anti-de Sitter space \(H^{n+1}_{1}(-1)\). If \(\inf(\lambda - \mu)^{2}>0\), then \(M=H^{m}(-n/m) \times H^{n-m}(-n/n-m)\), \(1\leq m\leq n-1\).
