This paper extends algebraic index theory from symplectic manifolds to symplectic orbifolds. The extension proves a generalization of a conjecture of \textit{B. Fedosov}, \textit{B. W. Schulze}, and \textit{N. Tarkhanov} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 54, No. 5, 1601--1639 (2004; Zbl 1071.53055)]. One consequence is a new proof of the index theorem of \textit{T. Kawasaki} [Nagoya Math. J. 84, 135--157 (1981; Zbl 0437.58020)]. Algebraic index theorems compute the pairing of \(K\)-theory with traces on formal deformation quantizations. B. Fedosov and (independently) R. Nest and B. Tsygan introduced algebraic index theory. \textit{R. Nest} and \textit{B. Tsygan} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 1996, No. 11, 557--564 (1996; Zbl 0871.58076)] showed that, when the symplectic manifold is a cotangent bundle and the deformation quantization comes from the asymptotic pseudodifferential calculus, the algebraic index theorem recovers the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. The paper under review uses formal deformation quantizations of convolution algebras of groupoids associated with symplectic orbifolds. Because the space of traces can have dimension greater than one, part of the work is to construct the trace that is appropriate for index theory. Motivated by a construction of \textit{B. Feigin}, \textit{G. Felder}, and \textit{B. Shoikhet} [Duke Math. J. 127, No. 3, 487--517 (2005; Zbl 1106.53055)], the authors use a cocycle in a twisted Hochschild complex to construct a twisted trace density, which defines the desired trace. The algebraic index theorem proven in this paper is a local index theorem.
