It is proven that countable direct limits of finite-dimensional Lie groups do not have small subgroups, i.e. that there is an identity neighborhood which contains no non-trivial subgroup. On the other hand, the additive group of the Fréchet space \(\mathbb R^\mathbb N\) is an infinite-dimensional Lie group which has small subgroups, so a version of the above result for infinite-dimensional Lie groups is proven under some additional technical assumptions.
