Consider a Lie group \(G\) which is the union of an ascending sequence \(G_1 \subseteq G_2 \subseteq \cdots\) of Lie groups. The question studied in the paper at hand is, when \(G\) is the inductive limit \(\varinjlim G_n\) in the category of Lie groups, topological groups, smooth manifolds, or topological spaces, respectively. As the author proved in a previous paper [\textit{H. Glöckner}, Compos. Math. 141, No. 6, 1551--1577 (2005; Zbl 1082.22012)], if all the \(G_n\) are finite-dimensional Lie groups, and \(G\) is the direct limit Lie group, then \(G\) is the inductive limit in all of the categories mentioned above. The paper under review is concerned with the case that the \(G_n\) themselves are infinite-dimensional. The author proves a number of general statements, under the hypothesis that \(G = \bigcup_N G_n\) admits a \textit{direct limit chart}. For instance, under this hypothesis, \(G = \varinjlim G_n\) as a topological space, if and only if the Lie algebra of \(G\) is the inductive limit of the Lie algebras of the \(G_n\) as a topological space. In this case, it follows that \(G = \varinjlim G_n\) as a Lie group. Furthermore, some concrete examples of direct limit groups are discussed, namely groups of compactly supported functions or diffeomorphisms, weak direct products of Lie groups, direct limits of unit groups of Banach algebras, and Lie groups of germs of analytic mappings.
