Let \(X\) be a canonical threefold, i.e. a projective threefold with only canonical singularities and an ample canonical divisor \(K_X\) over the complex number field \(\mathbb C\). One knows that the plurigenus \(p_n\) of \(X\) is \(>0\) for \(n\geq 0\), i.e. for \(n\geq 0\) one has \(h^0(X,\mathcal O_{X}(nK_X))\geq 1\). Moreover, when \(\chi(\mathcal O_X)\leq 0\), one may produce such integer \(n\) by \textit{A. R. Fletcher} [in: Algebraic geometry, Proc. Summer Res. Inst., Brunswick/Maine 1985, part 1, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 46, 221--231 (1987; Zbl 0662.14026)]. In the paper under review, the author turns to the case \(\chi(\mathcal O_X)>0\). Relying on a formula for \(\chi(\mathcal O_X(nK_X))\) described by A. R. Fletcher and M. Reid, he introduces an algorithm for computing the plurigenera, from which he proves that when \(\chi(\mathcal O_X)=1\) then \(h^0(X,\mathcal O_{X}(nK_X))\geq 1\) for \(n\geq 7\) and \(h^0(X,\mathcal O_{X}(nK_X))\geq 2\) for \(n\geq 10\). Moreover, in the case \(\chi(\mathcal O_X)=2\) he proves that \(h^0(X,\mathcal O_{X}(nK_X))\geq 1\) for \(n\geq 14\) and \(h^0(X,\mathcal O_{X}(nK_X))\geq 2\) for \(n\geq 20\), with \(8\) possible exceptional cases. The author claims that the algorithm may be used also in the case \(\chi(\mathcal O_X)\geq 3\).
