Let \(G\) denote a finite general linear group \(\text{GL}_n(q)\). Of interest here are \(\ell\)-modular representations of \(G\) with \(\ell\) not dividing \(q\) (i.e., the non-defining case). Representations are considered over both a discrete valuation ring \(\mathcal O\) and its residue field \(k\) (of characteristic \(\ell\)). The authors introduce and study a family of `linear Young modules' (parameterized by partitions of \(n\)) which are indecomposable summands of permutation modules for \(G\) (in analogy with ordinary Young modules for the corresponding symmetric group \({\mathfrak S}_n\)). The first main result is a determination of the vertices and Green correspondents of these modules. The authors next consider the \(q\)-Schur algebra \(S_q(n,n)\) which in many cases (including the classical case) is Morita equivalent to a quotient of the group algebra of \(G\). In these cases, the indecomposable tilting modules for the \(q\)-Schur algebra can be identified with a linear Young module, and one can associate the corresponding vertex and Green correspondent to the tilting module. Further, using projective covers of the linear Young modules, the authors construct projective covers of the indecomposable tilting modules. A final application is given to Specht filtrations for \(G\)-modules. When the minimum \(e\) such that \(\ell\) divides \(q^e-1\) is at least two, the authors show that the Specht and linear Young modules form a stratifying system for \(G\). As a result, if a \(kG\)-module has as Specht-filtration, one can define the notion of filtration multiplicity independent of the choice of filtration. The authors note that there are close connections with the work of \textit{R. Dipper} and \textit{J. Du} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 66, No. 3, 479-506 (1993; Zbl 0802.20013), J. Reine Angew. Math. 437, 101-130 (1993; Zbl 0768.20004), and Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 75, No. 3, 559-599 (1997; Zbl 0909.20027)] on Harish-Chandra vertices and source modules for \(G\), which makes extensive use of Hecke algebras as opposed to the direct \(G\)-representation theory approach contained here.
