Uniformly noncreasy Banach spaces were introduced by \textit{S.\,Prus} in [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl.\ 30, No.\,4, 2317--2324 (1997; Zbl 0899.46007)] and are of interest in fixed point theory. The class of uniformly noncreasy Banach spaces contains the uniformly rotund Banach spaces and the uniformly smooth Banach spaces. In the article under review, the author characterizes the uniformly noncreasy (and the noncreasy) \(\psi\)-direct sums \(X\oplus_\psi Y\) of Banach spaces. To accomplish this, the author first characterizes the extreme points and the smooth points of the unit ball of \(X\oplus_\psi Y\). The author uses his results to determine the noncreasy and the uniformly noncreasy \(\ell^p\)-sums of a sequence of Banach spaces and the noncreasy and the uniformly noncreasy Lebesgue-Bochner function spaces \(L^p(\mu, X)\). For example, the author shows that, if \(1<p<\infty\), \(L^p(\mu, X)\) is uniformly noncreasy exactly when it is either uniformly rotund or uniformly smooth.
