The main aim of the present paper is the study of Krull-Schmidt decompositions for small thick subcategories of some standard triangulated categories (stable module categories over group algebras, derived categories of rings, Noetherian stable homotopy categories, stable module categories over Hopf algebras, categories of finite spectra). Moreover, it is proved, using Grothendieck groups associated to essentially small triangulated categories, that in natural hypotheses Krull-Schmidt decompositions are connected with K-theory (Theorem 2.4). In the end of the paper some interesting open problems are exhibited.
