Let \(J(\{a_n\}, \{b_n\})\) be a semi-infinite Jacobi matrix with real diagonal entries \(b_n\) and positive off-diagonal \(a_n\). The problem considered in the present paper is the stability of the essential support of the absolutely continuous spectrum, that is, the equality \[ \Sigma_{ac}(\{a_n\}, \{b_n\})= \Sigma_{ac}(\{a_n+\tilde a_n\}, \{b_n+\tilde b_n\}) \] for perturbations \(\{\tilde a_n, \tilde b_n\}\) from certain classes; this question is well elaborated for \(a_n=1\), \(b_n=0\). The main result states that the above equality holds for general \(b_n\) and \[ \limsup_{n\to\infty} \frac1n \sum_{k=1}^n a_k^{-1}>0, \] and certain random perturbations \(\{\tilde a_n, \tilde b_n\}\). The problem of the stability of singular spectral types is also discussed.
