Two important infinite-dimensional Lie algebras associated to a finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\) are the current algebra \(\mathfrak{g}[t]=\mathfrak{g}\otimes \mathbb{C}[t]\) and the twisted current algebra \(\mathfrak{g}[t]^{\sigma}\), where \(\sigma\) is a diagram automorphism. In this work, the authors introduce and study a new family of graded restricted modules for these algebras, called Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules. These modules, denoted \(KR(m\omega_{i})\) and \(KR^{\sigma}(m\omega_{i})\), are indexed by \(i\) a node of the Dynkin diagram of \(\mathfrak{g}\) and \(m\) a non-negative integer and are defined by generators and relations. It is shown that these modules are typically indecomposable but not irreducible and their Jordan-Hölder series are studied. Most importantly it is shown that these Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules are finite-dimensional and restricted. Furthermore, links are made with Demazure modules for Kac-Moody algebras and Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules for quantum affine algebras and Yangians [\textit{A. N. Kirillov} and \textit{N. Yu. Reshetikhin}, Zap. Nauchn. Semin. Leningr. Otd. Mat. Inst. Steklova 160, 211--221 (1987; Zbl 0637.16007)] and the Bethe Ansatz in solvable lattice models.
