Let \(E\) be a Banach space and \(n\) be a positive integer. A (continuous) mapping \(P:E\to {\mathbb K} \), \({\mathbb K}={\mathbb R}\) or \({\mathbb C}\), is said to be an \(m\)-homogeneous polynomial if there is a (continuous) symmetric \(m\)-linear mapping \({\buildrel\vee\over P}\colon E\times E\times\dots\times E\to {\mathbb K}\) such that \(P(x)={\buildrel\vee\over P}(x,\dots,x)\) for all \(x\) in \(E\). The space of all \(m\)-homogeneous polynomials on \(E\) is denoted by \({\mathcal P}(^mE)\), while \({\mathcal P}_w(^mE)\) denotes all those polynomials which are weakly continuous on bounded sets and \({\mathcal P}_f(^mE)\) denotes the span of \(\{\phi^m:\phi\in E'\}\). The author introduces the concept of a polynomial-shrinking basis by saying that a Schauder basis \((e_i)_i\) of a Banach space \(E\) is polynomial-shrinking if, for every positive integer \(m\) and every \(m\)-homogeneous polynomial \(P\) on \(E\), \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}\sup_{\| x\| \leq 1}\left| {\buildrel\vee\over P}\left(\sum_{i=n+1}^\infty e_i'(x),x,x, \dots,x)\right)\right| =0. \] He shows that for a complex Banach space \(E\) with basis \((e_i)_i\), the following are equivalent: (i) The basis \((e_i)_i\) is polynomial-shrinking; (ii) for each integer \(m\), the monomials of degree \(m\) are a Schauder basis for \({\mathcal P}(^mE)\); (iii) \((e_i)_i\) is a shrinking basis for \(E\) and \(\overline{{\mathcal P}_f(^mE)}={\mathcal P}(^mE)\); (iv) \((e_i)_i\) is a shrinking basis for \(E\) and \({\mathcal P}_w(^mE)={\mathcal P}(^mE)\). \textit{R. M. Aron} and \textit{P. D. Berner} [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 106, 3--24 (1978; Zbl 0378.46043)] used the weak\(^*\) density of the unit ball of a Banach space \(E\) in the ball of its bidual to extend every \(m\)-homogeneous polynomial \(P\) on \(E\) to \(E''\). This extension is known as the canonical extension of \(P\). Using the result quoted above, the author shows that when \(E\) is a Banach space with a polynomial-shrinking basis, a homogeneous polynomial on \(E''\) is the canonical extension of a polynomial on \(E\) if and only if it is weak\(^*\) continuous on bounded sets.
