The purpose of the paper under review is to introduce the notion referred to in the title and to investigate some of its basic properties. Let \(M\) be a smooth manifold, \(\pi\in{\mathfrak X}^2(M)\) a Poisson bivector field, \(N\colon TM\to TM\) a \((1,1)\)-tensor field, and \(\phi\in\Omega^3(M)\) a closed 3-form. The quadruple \((M,\pi,N,\phi)\) is called a Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifold if the tensor fields \(\pi\) and \(N\) are compatible in the sense of Poisson Nijenhuis manifolds, \(i_N\phi\) is a closed form, and for all vector fields \(X,Y\in{\mathfrak X}(M)\) we have \([NX,NY]-N([NX,Y]+[X,NY]-N[X,Y])=\pi^\sharp(i_{X\wedge Y}\phi)\). According to one of the theorems proved in the present paper, the quadruple \((M,\pi,N,\phi)\) is a Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifold if and only if the triple \(((T^*M)_\pi,(TM)_N,\phi)\) is a quasi-Lie bialgebroid. The integrability problem for these structures is also addressed (in the sense of integrability of Lie algebras to Lie groups). One thus finds that the Poisson (quasi-)Nijenhuis manifolds are in one-to-one correspondence with the symplectic (quasi-)Nijenhuis groupoids that satisfy certain topological conditions. Eventually one shows that the generalized complex structures can be viewed as special cases of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures.
