Let \(D\subset\mathbb R\times\{x_2>0\}\) be a domain and let \(T_D:=D+i\mathbb R^2\) be the tube domain with base \(D\). Consider the Loeb criterion for \(T_D\) to be hyperbolic: \(T_D\) is hyperbolic iff there is no point \(a=(a_1,a_2)\in D\) for which there exists a sequence \((b_k)_{k=1}^\infty\) such that \(b_k\longrightarrow a_2\) and \([-k,k]\times\{b_k\}\subset D\), \(k\in\mathbb N\). The implication \(\Longrightarrow\) is obvious. The main result of the paper is the following example showing that the implication \(\Longleftarrow\) is false. There exists a \(\mathcal C^\infty\)-smooth domain \(D\subset\mathbb R\times\{x_2>0\}\) such that \(T_D\) is not hyperbolic and for \(b\in\mathbb R\) and \(k\in\mathbb N\) no segment \([-k,k]\times\{b\}\) is contained in \(D\). It is known that if \(T_D\) is not hyperbolic, then there exists a point \(a=(a_1,a_2)\in D\) such that for any \(k\in\mathbb N\) there exists a real-analytic function \(\gamma_k:[-k,k]\longrightarrow\mathbb R\) with \((t,\gamma_k(t))\in D\) and \(|\gamma_k-a_2|\leq1/k\). The author presents a partial converse to the above result. If there exists a point \(a=(a_1,a_2)\in D\) such that for any \(k\in\mathbb N\) there exists an affine function \(\gamma_k:[-k,k]\longrightarrow\mathbb R\) with \((t,\gamma_k(t))\in D\) and \(|\gamma_k-a_2|\leq1/k\), then \(T_D\) is not hyperbolic.
