Given a semigroup \(S\), one can consider the group \(C(S)\) generated by all involutive anti-automorphisms of \(S\). This is the main object of study in this paper. In the paper the authors describe \(C(S)\) for some classes of semigroups and also prove the following results: Theorem. Any group generated by involutions is isomorphic to \(C(S)\) for some commutative semigroup \(S\). Theorem. Let \(G\) be a group generated by involutions. Then there exists a semigroup \(S\) with a proper involution (that is an involution which is not a homomorphism) such that \(C(S)\cong\mathbb Z_2\times G\). If \(G\) is finite, then \(S\) may be taken to be finitely generated.
