The Hodge decomposition on Kähler manifolds is a very useful and strong result that connects the complex structure to the topology of the manifold. Naturally, one would hope for similar decompositions for non-Kähler manifolds and for that matter non-complex manifolds. To this end, the notion of \(C^{\infty}\)-pure-and-fullness introduced by \textit{T.-J. Li} and \textit{W. Zhang} [Commun. Anal. Geom. 17, No. 4, 651--683 (2009; Zbl 1225.53066)] in the complex case and that of the Hard Lefschetz condition in the symplectic case are useful. Motivated by string theory, Hitchin introduced the notion of ``generalized almost complex structures''. In this paper, the authors study the decomposition of cohomology introduced by generalized complex structures on compact manifolds. In particular, they consider the situation when a Bott-Chern like cohomology group maps surjectively onto the de Rham like cohomology group. To this end, they define the notions of pure and full in this setting (Definition 2.1) and prove (Proposition 2.3) that pure-and-fullness holds if and only if a certain decomposition holds. They also study the example of the Iwasawa manifold.
