The volume conjecture for a hyperbolic knot in \(S^3\), due originally to Kashaev and reformulated by H. and J. Murakami in terms of colored Jones polynomials, gives an asymptotic formula for the volume of the complement of the knot in terms of certain evaluations of the \(n\)'th colored Jones polynomial, as \(n \to \infty\). The conjecture is known for torus knots and some other classes of knots, and also some generalizations for links and knotted graphs (also in other types of 3-manifolds). In the present paper, the authors formulate a generalization of the volume conjecture for planar graphs \(\Gamma\) in \(S^3\), in terms of the Kauffman bracket of a graph whose edges are decorated by real colors (numbers) \(c\), obtaining asymptotically the volume of a truncated (hyperideal) hyperbolic polyhedron whose 1-skeleton is the graph \(\Gamma\) and with dihedral angles given by \(c\). As the authors note, one of the main difficulties of the volume conjecture for knots is the rigid geometry of the knot complement. To avoid this difficulty, the first author formulated a version of the volume conjecture for planar trivalent graphs (and outlined a proof for an infinite class of graphs), thus avoiding knottedness; now ``the topology of the complement of the graph is easy (it is always a handlebody) and the geometry is rich (polyhedra can deform). Indeed we show that under suitable combinatorial conditions the asymptotical behavior of the invariants we consider is related to the hyperbolic volume of the polyhedra whose 1-skeleton is described by the graphs.'' ``In the appendix we also provide a proof outlined elsewhere of the conjecture for an infinite family of planar graphs including the tetrahedra.''
