There is still no definitive answer to the following question: What are non-commutative holomorphic functions in \(d\)-variables? This class should certainly contain the non-commutative, also called free, polynomials, i.e., polynomials defined on \(d\) non-commuting variables. The purpose of this nice article is to show that on balanced domains in \(B(H)^d\), the set of all \(d\)-tuples of bounded and linear Hilbert space operators, there is an algebraic property -- intertwining preserving -- that together with an appropriate continuity is necessary and sufficient for a function to have a convergent power series, which in turn is equivalent to the function being approximable by free polynomials on finite sets.
