The article is devoted to Beurling-Selberg extremal problems and their applications. Let \(a,\lambda\in\Lambda:=\left(0,\infty\right)^d\), \[ G_\lambda\left(x\right):=\exp\left(-\sum_{j=1}^d\lambda_j\pi x_j^2\right),\quad x\in{\mathbb R}^d, \] be the Gaussian function, and let \[ Q\left(a\right):=\prod_{j=1}^d\left[-a_j,a_j\right]. \] The first main result gives a solution to the Beurling-Selberg extremal problem of finding optimal majorants of \(G_\lambda\left(x\right)\) that have a Fourier transform supported in \(Q\left(a\right)\): Theorem. ``Let \(a,\lambda\in\Lambda\). If \(F:\mathbb R^d\to\mathbb R\) is an integrable function that satisfies {\parindent=0.6cm\begin{itemize}\item[(i)] \(F\left(x\right)\geq G_\lambda\left(x\right)\) for each \(x\in{\mathbb R}^d\), and \item[(ii)] \(\widehat{F}\left(\xi\right)=0\) for each \(\xi\not\in Q\left(a\right)\), \newline then \[ \int_{{\mathbb R}^d}F\left(x\right)\,dx\geq\prod_{j=1}^d\lambda_j^{-\frac{1}{2}}\Theta\left(0;ia_j^2/\lambda_j\right), \leqno{(1)} \] where \(\Theta\left(v;\tau\right)\) is Jacobi's theta function\dots'' \end{itemize}} Moreover, inequality (1) holds if and only if \(F\) has the special form given in \S~3 of the article. The second result is on the minorants of the Gaussian function \(G_\lambda\left(x\right)\): Theorem. ``Let \(a,\lambda\in\Lambda\). If \(F:\mathbb R^d\to\mathbb R\) is an integrable function that satisfies {\parindent=0.6cm\begin{itemize}\item[(i)] \(F\left(x\right)\leq G_\lambda\left(x\right)\) for each \(x\in\mathbb R^d\), and \item[(ii)] \(\widehat{F}\left(\xi\right)=0\) for each \(\xi\not\in Q\left(a\right)\), \newline then \[ \int_{{\mathbb R}^d}F\left(x\right)\,dx\leq\prod_{j=1}^d\lambda_j^{-\frac{1}{2}}\Theta\left(\frac{1}{2};ia_j^2/\lambda_j\right). \] Furthermore, there exists a positive constant \(\gamma_0=\gamma_0\left(d\right)\) such that if \(\gamma:=\min\left\{a_j^2/\lambda_j:1\leq j\leq d\right\}\geq\gamma_0\), then \[ \prod_{j=1}^d\lambda_j^{-\frac{1}{2}}\Theta\left(\frac{1}{2};ia_j^2/\lambda_j\right)\leq \left(1+5d e^{-\pi\gamma}\right)\int_{{\mathbb R}^d}L_{\lambda,a}\left(x\right)\,dx, \] where \(L_{\lambda,a}(x)\) is defined by (3.2).'' \end{itemize}} Thus, the majorants constructed are extremal, but minorants are only claimed to be asymptotically extremal. Having these results proven, the authors consider a generalization of the distribution method introduced in \textit{E. Carneiro} et al. [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 365, No. 7, 3493--3534 (2013; Zbl 1276.41018)], and a generalization of the Gaussian subordination result from the same paper. \S~5 is devoted to periodic analogues of several theorems from the previous sections, to the class of contemplated functions, and to Hilbert-type inequalities. As the authors note, the method developed here for the Gaussian function \(G_\lambda\left(x\right)\) allows us to produce majorants and minorants for other functions. These results and ideas could also be useful in analytic number theory. The article is concluded by discussion on open problems and further directions of this research. The article contains an excellent introduction into the problem area, a huge number of references, and a description of the results obtained. Open problems should also encourage the reader. The article must be interesting for specialists in harmonic analysis, functional analysis, complex analysis, and approximation theory.
