Considering all possible Riemannian metrics on a given compact manifold, the author looks into the problem of determining the possible signs of the first eigenvalue of Jacobi operators of the identity map of the manifold. In this paper he gives the complete answer to the problem for manifolds of dimension less or equal to three. In case of manifolds of higher dimension only partial answers are given.
