The problem of existence of maximal semi-definite invariant subspaces of certain operators in a Krein space plays a central role in the theory of linear operators in definite inner product spaces. Let K be a Krein space and \(K=K^++K^-\) a fundamental decomposition of K. for every \(T\in L(K)\), T has a block-matrix representation \(T=\left[ \begin{matrix} T_{11}\quad T_{12}\\ T_{21}\quad T_{22}\end{matrix} \right],\) with respect to \(K=K^+K^-\). Suppose for \(S\in L(K)\) there exists a net \(S^{(i)}\) of operators in L(K) such that \(S_{11}^{(i)}\to S_{11},\) \(S_{22}^{(i)^*}\to S^*_{22}\) strongly, \(S_{21}^{(i)}\to S_{21}\) weakly, \(S_{12}^{(i)}\to S_{12}\) uniformly and \(S_{12}\) is compact. If each \(S^{(i)}\) has an invariant maximal non-negative subspace, then S also has one. This result shows that the approximation method of M. G. Krein for \(\Pi_ k\) space case can be abstracted to a general scheme which is intrinsicly contained in a series of recent papers.
