Let for \(\alpha >0\) real and \(\mu\) positive integer \(\left( \begin{matrix} \alpha \\ \mu \end{matrix} \right):=\alpha (\alpha -1)...(\alpha -\mu +1)/\mu !.\) The mixed difference of ``order'' (\(\alpha\),\(\beta\)), \(\alpha >0\), \(\beta >0\), of a two-variable function is defined as follows: \[ \Delta^{\alpha,\beta}_{h,\eta}f(x,y)=\sum^{\infty}_{j=0}\sum^{\i nfty}_{k=0}(-1)^{j+k}\left( \begin{matrix} \alpha \\ j\end{matrix} \right)\left( \begin{matrix} \beta \\ k\end{matrix} \right)f(x-h_ j,y-\eta k), \] with increments h, \(\eta\in {\mathbb{R}}\). The author considers the class \(L^ p_{2\pi}\) \((1\leq p<\infty)\) of all (complex-valued) functions of two variables, Lebesgue-integrable with p-power on the square \(Q=<0,2\pi;0,2\pi >\) and \(2\pi\)-periodic with respect to each variable, separately. If for \(f\in L^ p_{2\pi}\) there exists \(g\in L^ p_{2\pi}\) such that \[ \lim \| h^{-\alpha}\eta^{- \beta}\Delta^{\alpha,\beta}_{h,\eta}f-g\|_ p=0,\quad h\to +0,\quad \eta \to +0, \] then g is called the Liouville-Grünwald derivative of f in the \(L^ p_{2\pi}\) norm and is denoted by \(D^{\alpha,\beta}f\). The author proves a theorem of Jackson type: \[ \inf_{T_{m,n}}\| f-T_{m,n}\|_ p\quad \leq \quad A(\alpha)B(\beta)m^{-\alpha}n^{-\beta}\| D^{\alpha,\beta}f\|_ p \] where \(T_{m,n}\) are trigonometric polynomials of degree not exceeding m-1 and n-1 with respect to the first and the second variable, respectively, and A(\(\alpha\)),B(\(\beta\)) are positive constants depending on the indicated parameter only. More properties of Steklov's functions-differences and derivatives for functions belonging to the indicated class are given. Similar results in the one-dimensional case were established by \textit{P. Pych-Taberska} [ibid. 14, 43-55 (1984; Zbl 0591.42013)] and \textit{R. Taberski} [ibid. 14, 57-80 (1984; Zbl 0578.44004)].
