\textit{L. Krop} and \textit{D. E. Radford} [in J.~Algebra 302, No. 1, 214-230 (2006; Zbl 1126.16028)] introduced the rank as a measure of complexity for finite-dimensional Hopf algebras whose coradical is a sub-Hopf algebra. They classified the finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras \(H\) of rank one which are generated as algebras by the first term of the coradical filtration over fields of characteristic zero. In the paper under review, the author classifies the finite-dimensional pointed rank one Hopf algebras \(H\) over algebraically closed fields \(k\) of prime characteristic \(p\), which are generated as algebras by the first term of the coradical filtration. Three types of Hopf algebras presented by generators and relations are obtained. For Hopf algebras with semi-simple coradical only the first and second type appears. The second and third types are new and require new ideas and methods. Furthermore, the author determines the indecomposable projective modules for certain Hopf algebras in each type.
