In the paper under review the authors study Wakimoto modules over affine Kac-Moody algebras at the critical level. In the first main results the authors show that the algebraically constructed isomorphism from the spectrum of the center of the chiral algebra on a smooth algebraic curve associated to an affine Kac-Moody algebra \(\hat{\mathfrak{g}}_{\mathrm{crit}}\) at the critical level to the space of \(\check{\mathfrak{g}}\)-opers on the punctured disc, where \(\check{\mathfrak{g}}\) is the Langlands dual Lie algebra, coincides with the geometrical map defined by Beilinson and Drinfeld. Next, the authors explicitly describe geometric realization of Wakimoto modules as Hecke eigen-D-modules on the affine Grassmannian and as quasi-coherent sheaves on the flag variety of the Langlands dual group. As an application, the authors construct a resolution of the vacuum modules at the critical level in terms of Wakimoto modules, proving an earlier conjecture of Feigin and the first author.
