The authors study some classes of second order evolution equations of the form \( \ddot z(t) +A_0z(t)+D\dot z(t) =0 \) that arise when describing transverse motions of a thin beam. After introducing an appropriate phase space, as in other works on the subject, they consider the semigroup associated with the above equation in this phase space. The authors focus their attention on the analyticity and Riesz basis property of this semigroup rather than directly on stability questions as in the previous works. On the other hand, the obtained results yield several conditions on stability via the spectral mapping theorem that holds true for analytic semigroups.
