Given an algebra \(A\), the finitistic dimension conjecture states that the finitistic dimension of \(A\), which is defined as the supremum of the projective dimensions of all finitely generated \(A\)-modules of finite projective dimension, should be finite. This conjecture remains open. The main difficulty of attacking the problem is lack of knowledge about the module category or the syzygies of the modules. Recently, there are some efforts of investigation on this conjecture, where additional algebras as new reference objects are introduced. For example, [see \textit{C.-C. Xi}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 193, No. 1-3, 287-305 (2004); erratum ibid. 202, No. 1-3, 325-328 (2005; Zbl 1067.16016), Adv. Math. 201, No. 1, 116-142 (2006; Zbl 1103.18011) and J. Algebra 319, No. 9, 3666-3688 (2008; Zbl 1193.16006)]. In the paper under review, the authors consider a given algebra and a class of full subcategories of modules over the fixed algebra. Their idea is to use the finitistic dimension of these subcategories (usually the class of all stratifying subcategories \(\mathcal F(\Theta)\) with \(\Theta\) a stratifying system) for bounding the finitistic dimension of the fixed algebra. To avoid technical terminology, the main results are referred to the paper.
