Let \(R\) be a commutative ring. The paper is concerned with linearly compact \(R\)-modules. The class of linearly compact \(R\)-modules with respect to the discrete topology strictly contains the class of Artinian \(R\)-modules. Let \(I\) be an ideal of a noetherian commutative ring \(R\). The concept of local homology modules of an \(R\)-module with respect to \(I\), which is dual to Grothendieck's theory of local cohomology modules, was introduced in previous work of the authors [Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 131, No. 1, 61--72 (2001; Zbl 1094.13524)]. In the paper under review, the authors prove some basic properties such as the noetherianness, the vanishing and non-vanishing of local homology modules of linearly compact modules. A duality theory between local homology and local cohomology modules of linearly compact modules is developed by using Matlis duality and Macdonald duality.
