\textit{W. Crawley-Boevey} introduced the notion of a \textit{generic module} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 63, No. 2, 241--265 (1991; Zbl 0741.16005)]. The notion was extended by \textit{H. Lenzing} [in: Advances in algebra and model theory. Selected surveys presented at conferences in Essen 1994 and Dresden 1995. Reading: Gordon and Breach Science Publishers. Algebra Log. Appl. 9, 375--385 (Zbl 0957.16008)]. Following this, the authors extend it to the definition of generic sheaves on an elliptic curve. The notions of \textit{rank, Euler characteristic, slope} are extended to generic sheaves and the generic sheaves on an elliptic curve are determined; it is shown that they can be ordered by the slope. Also the homomorphisms among generic sheaves are described and it is shown that the coherent sheaves on an elliptic curve can be classified by generic sheaves.
