The purpose of this paper is to describe the isogeny classes of supersingular abelian threefolds over \(k = \mathbb{F}_{2^n}\) containing the Jacobian of a genus 3 curve. This is done in terms of the Weil polynomial (characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius endomorphism). It turns out that for \(n > 6\) all such classes contain the Jacobian of a genus 3 curve except in some explicitly specified cases. Also it is proved that for even \(n> 6\) there are maximal and minimal curves of genus 3 over \(k\). For \(n=6\) there are maximal curves over \(k\), but no minimal curves. For \(n=2\) or 4 there are neither maximal nor minimal curves over \(k\). The methods of proofs are constructive, they allow the explicit construction of supersingular quartics with Jacobian in a prescribed isogeny class. Firstly, the authors classify the supersingular elliptic curves over \(k\), express their trace of Frobenius and \(k\)-isomorphism class in terms of the coefficients of normalized models, and present the isogeny classes of supersingular abelian threefolds. Then they examine what isogeny classes of supersingular abelian threefolds contain the Jacobian of a projective smooth curve of genus 3 and reveal that some abelian threefolds cannot be realized as Jacobians. Finally, the authors determine the parametrization of some rational curves, study the number of points of certain hyperelliptic curves of genus 4, and use this to determine the existence of quartics with elliptic quotients in prescribed isogeny classes.
