In 1987 \textit{A. Schinzel} [Acta Arith. 49, 55--70 (1987; Zbl 0632.12024)] conjectured that if \(g\) is a fixed complex polynomial and \(g(h(x))\) has at most \(l\) terms, then \(h\) has at most \(c(l,g)\) terms. The author establishes this conjecture in a stronger form, without fixing \(g\), and obtains moreover a classification of polynomials \(f\) having at most \(l\) terms, which can be written in the form \(f(X)=g(h(X))\) with \(\deg g, \deg h \geq2\).
