Cluster algebras were introduced by \textit{S. Fomin} and \textit{A. Zelevinsky} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 15, No. 2, 497-529 (2002; Zbl 1021.16017)] in order to model the multiplicative properties of the Kashiwara-Lusztig (dual) canonical basis of a quantum group, and total positivity in algebraic groups. A cluster algebra can be associated to a finite quiver, or directed graph. In this article, it is shown that if a group acts as automorphisms on a quiver (subject to certain constraints: the action must be admissible in a certain sense), then the cluster algebra of the quotient quiver can be naturally realised as a subalgebra of the algebra obtained from the cluster algebra of the original quiver via a projection map on its ambient field induced by the group action (i.e. identifying indeterminates in the same orbit). The results apply in particular to cluster algebras of finite type, in which case the two algebras are shown to coincide. The results are also interpreted in the corresponding cluster category.
