This paper contains a large collection of theorems and questions relating to four different problems: the abundance of maps \(g:X\to\mathbb R^m\) for which \(f^{-1}(y)\cap g^{-1}(\Pi^d)\), or its image under \(g\), is small, where \(f:X\to Y\) is a given map and \(\Pi^d\) a \(d\)-hyperplane in \(\mathbb R^m\); circumstances under which division of a subset of \(\mathbb R^m\) into collections of possibly affine subsets must have non-empty intersection; simplifying preimages under a map by homotopy; the Fermat-Weber location problem.
