A Banach space \(E\) has the Banach--Saks property if for every sequence \(x_i\in E\), weakly converging to \(0\), there exists a subsequence \((y_k)\) such that \(\lim_{n\to\infty}n^{-1}\| \sum_1^ny_k\| =0\). The space \(E\) has the Banach--Saks \(p\)-property (\(1<p\leq\infty\)) if for every \(x_i\to 0\) weakly, there is a subsequence \((y_k)\) such that \(\sup_nn^{-1/p}\| \sum_1^ny_k\| <\infty\) (\(\sup_n \| \sum_1^ny_k\| <\infty\) for \(p=\infty\)). The number \(\gamma(E)=\sup \{p: E\) has the Banach--Saks \(p\)-property\(\}\) is known as the ``Banach--Saks space index'', and was intensively investigated in [\textit{E.\,M.\thinspace Semenov} and \textit{F.\,A.\thinspace Sukochev}, Sb.\ Math.\ 195, No.\,2, 263--285 (2004; Zbl 1078.46010)]. Some results of the paper under review are: If a Banach space \(E\) with a symmetric basis has the Banach--Saks \(\infty\)-property, then \(E=\ell_1\) or \(c_0\). There exists a space \(E\) with a symmetric basis (the Lorentz space \(\lambda(\varphi)\) with \(\varphi_k=\ln(k+1)\)) and \(\gamma(E)=\infty\) which does not have the Banach--Saks \(\infty\)-property. There exists a reflexive Banach space with a symmetric basis that does not possess the Banach--Saks property. In the construction of this example, the authors use Baernstein's well-known example of a reflexive Banach space that fails to have the Banach--Saks property. The paper contains no proofs.
