The concept of regularity for a coherent sheaf on a projective space \(\mathbb P^n\) is due to \textit{D. Mumford} [Lectures on Curves on an Algebraic Surface, Princeton University Press (1966; Zbl 0187.42701)]. The present paper introduces a concept of regularity for a coherent sheaf on a smooth quadric hypersurface \(Q_n \subset \mathbb P^{n+1}\). Such a concept is defined in terms of the two spinor bundles \(\Sigma_1,\Sigma_2\) on \(Q_n\) [see for instance \textit{G. Ottaviani}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 307, No. 1, 301--316 (1988; Zbl 0657.14006)]. When \(n = 2\) the definition coincides with the concept of \((m,m)\)-regularity given by \textit{J. W. Hoffman} and \textit{H. H. Wang} [Adv. Geom. 4, No. 4, 513--536 (2004; Zbl 1063.13001)] and this fact is used in the paper in order to obtain the analog of Mumford's results in \(\mathbb P^n\). The main result of the paper is an extension to vector bundles on a smooth quadric hypersurface of the Evans-Griffiths splitting criterion in \(\mathbb P^n\) [see \textit{E. G. Evans} and \textit{P. Griffith}, Ann. Math. (2) 114, 323--333 (1981; Zbl 0497.13013)]. On \(Q_n\) the vanishing of the intermediate cohomology implies that the vector bundle is a direct sum of line bundles and twists of spinor bundles.
