The base point free theorem is a fundamental result in higher dimensional birational geometry. It states that if \((X,\Delta )\) is a complex projective log pair with Kawamata log terminal singularities and \(L\) is a nef Cartier divisor such that \(aL-(K_X+\Delta )\) is nef and big for some \(a>0\), then \(mL\) is globally generated for all \(m\gg 0\). In [Math. Ann. 296, No. 4, 595--605 (1993; Zbl 0818.14002)], \textit{J. Kollár} proved an effective version of this result which has many important applications. Recently, Ambro and Fujino proved a version of the base point free theorem for log canonical pairs. In the paper under review, the author proves an effective version of the base point free theorem for log canonical pairs. He shows that for any positive integer \(n\) and any number \(a\geq 0\), there exists a positive integer \(m=2^{n+1}(n+1)!(\lceil a\rceil+n)\) such that if \((X,\Delta )\) is a complex projective \(n\)-dimensional log canonical pair, \(L\) is a nef Cartier divisor such that \(aL-(K_X+\Delta )\) is nef and log big, then \(|mL|\) is base point free.
