It is known that the Lipschitz condition for a function \(f\) does not imply the inequality \(\|f(A)-f(B)\|\leq \text{const}\|A-B\|\) for selfadjoint operators \(A,B\) on a Hilbert space [see \textit{J.\,B.\thinspace Farforovskaja}, Vestn.\ Leningr.\ Univ.\ 23, No.\,19 (Ser.\ Mat.\ Mekh.\ Astron.\ No.\ 4), 94--97 (1968; Zbl 0165.48002); \textit{V.\,V.\thinspace Peller}, Funct.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 19, 111--123 (1985; Zbl 0587.47016)]. The authors show that the situation is quite different for the Hölder class \(\Lambda_\alpha (\mathbb R)\), \(0<\alpha <1\), the Zygmund class \(\Lambda_1(\mathbb R)\), and all the Hölder-Zygmund classes. In all these cases, the appropriate inequality for a function implies the one for a pair of selfadjoint operators. Precise results are obtained for classes of functions defined in terms of finite differences and moduli of continuity. Similar problems for unitary operators and contractions are also considered.
