The authors study the Leavitt path algebra \(L_K(E)\) over an arbitrary directed graph \(E\) and an arbitrary field \(K\). The main purpose is to classify the Leavitt path algebras of the form \(L_K(E)\) in ring-theoretic terms, where \(E\) is acyclic. It is shown that if \(E\) is an arbitrary acyclic graph then the Leavitt path algebra \(L_K(E)\) is locally \(K\)-matricial, that is, \(L_K(E)\) is the direct union of subalgebras, each of which is isomorphic to a finite direct sum of finite matrix rings over the field \(K\). As a direct consequence, the authors prove that the following conditions are equivalent for an arbitrary graph \(E\): (1) \(L_K(E)\) is von Neumann regular. (2) \(L_K(E)\) is \(\pi\)-regular. (3) \(E\) is acyclic. (4) \(L_K(E)\) is locally \(K\)-matricial. (5) \(L_K(E)\) is strongly \(\pi\)-regular. -- The paper ends by showing how additional regularity conditions can be appended to this list of equivalent conditions. The paper is very readable and well written. All researchers who are related to these topics will be interested in this nice paper.
