Exact asymptotics of the uniform error of interpolation by multilinear splines (Q976202)

For box partitions the estimate of the uniform error of interpolation on rectangular partition by bivariate splines linear in each variable is due to \textit{E. F. D'Azevedo} [SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 22, No. 1, 198--217 (2000; Zbl 0974.65015)] who obtained the local error estimates. In this paper the author constructs an asymptotically optimal sequence of box partitions and determines the exact asymptotic value of the optimal error of interpolation for a function \(f\in C^2(D)\) with fixed signature (with fixed number of positive and negative second derivatives) through the domain. The approach of the study here is similar to that used for studying the asymptotics of the error of approximation by linear splines.
