The author presents a summary of results published in recent years about the Halanay lemma: Let \(f(t)\) to be a positive function on \([t_{0}-\tau,\infty)\) with the derivative \(f'(t)\) defined on \([t_{0},\infty]\). If \( f'(t)\leq -\alpha f(t)+\beta \sup_{{t-\tau}\leq\sigma\leq{t}}{f(\sigma)}\) for \(t\geq t_{0}\) and \(\alpha>\beta>{0}\), then there exist \(\gamma>0\) and \({k>0}\) such that the inequality \[ f(t)\leq {{k} \exp{(-\gamma (t-t_{0}))}} \] is true for \(t\geq t_{0}, (\tau>0)\). A discrete version of this lemma is formulated for a finite-difference equation and a generalization of the initial lemma is proved in the case of variable coefficients \(\alpha(t)\) and \(\beta(t)\). These results are applied to the analysis of the solutions and their behavior for delay differential equations.
